A day in the life at West Monroe: Energy & Utilities

Take a glimpse into your first months on the job

Ready to see what your career might look like in our Energy & Utilities practice? Our clients' needs change every day — and so do the projects our consultants work on. No two career paths are the same for our staff, just like no two days will be the same. Here’s a glimpse at the first 100 days of one consultant’s journey. When you join West Monroe, you’ll create your own!

Day 1: Meet your new work family

You’re introduced to the West Monroe Energy & Utilities practice, with whom you’ll collaborate on a daily basis. On your team, you’ll find mentors, partners, and protégés. You’re an integral piece of the puzzle, and we’re glad you’re here.

Day 5: Jump right in

While you learn the ropes, you’re joining an established client team as they facilitate a workshop for a major metropolitan energy company. The workshop is one of several where the team is seeking alignment among internal staff across business functions. The goal? Understand and respond to concerns around Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

Day 30: Accept your next challenge

An investor owned utility is seeking a modernized communications system for real-time monitoring of their electrical distribution network. Their legacy system is outdated and no longer supported by the manufacturer. The client is looking for West Monroe’s multidisciplinary blend of seasoned industry experts and business-savvy technologists. Ready to get started?

Day 35: Executives need your advice

We’ll start by defining the business case at a high level. To do that, we’ll need executive buy-in. Engaging executives early not only helps to build the functional requirements for the new system, it helps to shape the governance structure required as we move through the evaluation and deployment processes of implementing new technology.

Day 45: Work hard, play hard

At West Monroe, we believe in bettering the communities in which we work and live. Today, as part of our corporate social responsibility initiative, our Sustainability committee has organized a river clean-up day. The whole team is pitching in to have some fun and make a difference for a cause we care about.

Day 50: Invest in yourself—we’ll back you

Our consultants can validate their technical know-how with the latest credentials and certifications. Your colleagues want to foster your knowledge and help grow your career. Prepare for the Professional Engineers (PE) license or Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate during your non-billable hours, leveraging the great minds on your team as a valuable resource.

Day 100: Become the expert

Now that you hold a Professional Engineers (PE) license and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate, you want to help other new hires acquire the credential. Host a lunch-and-learn, sponsored by the company, to share your experience and help others prepare. Perhaps you’ll even lead a committee, through our “chiefs” program, to formalize training and help develop other consultants.
